The Giant Swordtail belongs to the Papilionidae family of butterflies. The hind wings finish in a very long tail, which is the longest among all members of the Papilionidae family. The species was named by Boisduval in the 1836

Its wingspan reaches 8–12 centimetres (3.1–4.7 in).
